It’s Merry Christmas, not Happy Holidays…???

Or, “Keep the ‘Christ’ in Christmas”.

*sigh*

There’s just so much hate and negativity out there that it’s starting to infect the holidays. This recent debate (I say recent since I just started seeing these posts maybe in the last few years) talks about how we’re ‘ruining’ Christmas by calling it ‘Xmas’ or we’re not appreciating its significance for what it truly means when we say ‘Happy Holidays’. That we’re offending someone, some thing or somebody.

*sigh*

I’m really not sure of the how, why, who, or what started this whole debate, but it’s a real thing out there. I did some quick ‘Googlin’ and … wow!

I’m not here to debate the pros and cons, who’s right, and who is  wrong. I’m not here to point fingers at the media, retail, government or the advertising agencies. I’m not going to ramble on about holiday hours, holiday work parties, ‘Christmas’ gift-exchanges or diversity tolerance.

I’m simply here to offer my condolences to all the people of the world who have that much angst in their heart, that they need to cast this stone.

Regardless of your religion, regardless of your secular choices, of your ‘up-bringing’, your following, your neighborhood, your skin color, or which side of the sidewalk you walk on. I’m hoping that maybe we can all pause during this time of the year and just enjoy the life we are living.

Enjoy it.

For me, personally. I say Happy Holidays. I say Happy Holidays because there is more than one celebration going on this month. Hanukkah, Kwanza as well as a handful of other significant events are celebrated during just the month of December, let alone November or January. And I’m sure there are many more than I’ve missed.

I work with colleagues from different walks of life who don’t recognize any of the aforementioned Holidays. I work with colleagues who do.

My point is this. I remember during my childhood years in elementary and middle school reading and learning about this place being the ‘Great American Melting Pot’. Yet every single day we find new ways to separate and divide ourselves further and further. (Don’t get me wrong, I’m not immune or ignorant to the fact that our world has become a much danger place since my childhood)

Different is not wrong. It’s just different.

From my home to yours, Happy Holidays everyone. May you and yours find peace, joy and happiness.

(as if I could pass up the opportunity to share some School House Rocks!)
